Ray Russo, WWII Vet, Galena, 9/9/11

It is with deep sadness we have learned of the passing of Ray Russo, 92, on 4 Sep 2011.  Those of us who have participated in the Veterans Day events in Galena would see him there in his class A uniform sharing his memorabilia and talking to everyone.

Sgt. Russo was a WWII Veteran with the 315th Bomb Wing of the 20th Air Force who flew the last mission over Japan on August 14 and 15 1945, which ended WWII. He was very active with the Veterans of Foreign War Post 8175 in Elkton, MD. He held many positions with Post 8175 including Service Officer. In 2007 he was voted Veteran of the year, in 2008 as Surgeon and in 2009 as Service Officer all for the State of Maryland Veterans of Foreign War. Ray spoke about WWII at many schools and in 2010 had the honor speaking at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

A fireman since 1938, he was Fire Chief with Brookline Fire Co. for many years in Havertown, PA. When he moved to Cecil County he joined the Cecilton Fire Co. and Fire Police. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree, where he organized parties and dances for the disabled children of Kent County. He was a charter member of the Rotary. Also a member of the Catholic War Veterans, VFW District 10, Disabled American Veterans and a 29th Division Member.

Ray always said he had a wonderful journey in life. He definitely served our Country and our Veterans.
