Chestertown, MD Memorial Day Honors
We have been invited once again by The Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post # 36 in Chestertown, MD to a special Memorial Day service and parade in Chestertown, MD on Monday May 27, 2013.  The MD PG will stand in a flag line to honor a fallen hero at St. Paul's Episcopal Cemetery.
This year Post 36 will be honoring Ernest Cookerly.  Drafted in August, 1941, he served in Panama and the southwest Pacific from New Caledonia to Buna, Finchaven, Hollandia, and finally Luzon to Manilla. Discharged as a captain in 1946, but remained in the Reserves. Under the GI bill, he was able to attend college and matriculated at Washington College in February 1946, graduating from Western Maryland College in September, 1949, and the University of Maryland School of Law in 1950. Having accomplished 7 academic years in 4 ½ years. Shortly after graduating from Law School, he was recalled to active duty. He spent some time at Fort Meade and then was transferred to the General Staff at the Pentagon. He was selected to escort Sen. Milton R. Young, N.D. and Gen L.L. Williams to Korea to investigate field commanders complaints about a shortage of ammunition.  Discharged from the service in 1953.  We will honor this hero by standing a flag line during the service recounting the hero’s accomplishments.  After we complete the cemetery honors, the MD PG has also been invited to participate in the Chestertown parade and short ceremony and veteran recognition near the town center.
I will be hosting a preliminary rally point at the Osprey at the corner of MD 50 and MD 213 at Wye Mills, MD.  We will leave this point and proceed on MD 213 to the final rally point at the Royal Farms at the corner of MD 213 and MD 544.  Anyone wishing to fall in line on the way will be welcome to do so.  This distance is approximately 21 miles.
From the final rally point at the Royal Farms at MD 544 and MD 213, we will all ride to St. Paul's Episcopal Cemetery, 7579 Sandy Bottom Rd. Chestertown, MD 21620and set the flag line.  This distance is approximately 4 miles.
The parade following the cemetery ceremony is completely voluntary.  (Approximately 1 mile). Those who do not wish to participate in the parade may leave following the cemetery honors.
This event is open to all who wish to honor our veterans and those who sacrificed for our country.  Come on iron horses or in cages - all will be welcome.  3' / 5' flags will be needed for the flag line.  If you are going to participate in the parade - safely mounted large flags are welcome, or decorate your iron steed anyway you wish - as long as it's safe.
Food and gas are available at both rally points.
This event will be conducted on Memorial Day Monday 27 May, 2013.
